Another pool is near the huge water slides, and two others are partially in the shade all afternoon. Once checked in, the resort is so full of fun adventures! Different types of restaurants (some require reservations for dinner), slides, playing fields, areas for tennis and soccer, pool tables in one lounge, and glorious clean and sparkling pools! One pool has the edge facing straight over the ocean, and offers friendly guest competitions for all sorts of water games throughout the day. There was difficulty communicating with the hotel about the needs prior to arrival (phone contact assured the needs, but the reservation was not adjusted), however the hotel did change the rooms to the appropriate bed arrangement after the family explained the room they were given would not adequately meet their needs. After check in, two of the rooms for our travel groups needed adjustment, one was missing a tv remote and had a broken balcony door lock, the other room had a different bed set up that had to be changed to meet the needs of the family with a special needs member. Nearly every employee at the resort could communicate clearly in English, and attended to tasks cheerfully and quickly. The shuttle transfers were made seamlessly, and the all of the staff at the resort were helpful and courteous. The air and shuttle transfers were clearly communicated, and the wheelchair attendant in the Cancun airport was very helpful (travelers - these attendants are extremely grateful for tips). Our three family groups, including seniors and special needs, all found the week to be extremely enjoyable. The Crown Paradise Club in Cancun offered a lot of fun and relaxation for our multi-family vacation. Once checked in, the resort is so full of fun adventures! Different types of restaurants (some require reservations for dinner), slides, playing fields, areas for tennis and soccer, pool tables in one lounge, and glorious clean and sparkling.

MacOS Catalina brought big changes to the Mac, including the ability to run iPad apps natively, opening the platform up to a much larger number of developers than ever before. Users could even have macOS slowly fade between the two background images over the course of the day. No more mountains! Mojave brought a new system-wide Dark Mode, and the OS shipped with two versions of its default wallpaper to match. Named after a breathtaking spot in Yosemite National Park, El Capitan was a clean-up year after 10.10. The wallpaper ushered in a new era based on … well … mountains. Yosemite brought another UI refresh to the Mac, making things flatter and more modern. The wave depicted looks as intimidating as the ones in the famous surfing location. Mavericks marked the beginning of Apple’s “California location” naming scheme for Mac releases. Just like Snow Leopard before it, with Mountain Lion, Apple opted to clean up and revise the existing theme as opposed to changing directions for what would be a less-impactful release of OS X. The space nerd in me likes the idea, but the execution of this one leaves dead-last on my list of favorites. Lion kept up the space theme, this time showing off the Andromeda galaxy. This starscape is still one of my favorites. The “no new features” mantra for Snow Leopard didn’t ban a new wallpaper, thankfully. Its not quite as advanced as Apples latest OS. The server version of Leopard server came with its own unique wallpaper that is a real treat: If you havent yet upgraded to one of the best MacBooks and Macs and are using a slightly older version, macOS 10.14 Mojave will serve you well. It ushered in the “space era” of OS X wallpapers, which was used heavily in the new Time Machine interface as well. As such, Leopard was the first version of OS X to break from the Aqua-themed wallpaper. While that may or may not be true, it is my favorite Aqua-inspired wallpaper.Ĭomplete with a revised, unified user interface and shiny new Dock, 10.5 broke the Aqua mold. Many consider Tiger to be the best “classic” version of Mac OS X. While Panther inflicted Macs everywhere with Brushed Metal, its wallpaper stayed on brand, refreshing the original 10.0 image. In my head, the trails streaking across the screen were from a set of comets. Jaguar took the same Aqua-inspired theme but added some depth and motion to things. The sweeping blue arcs and curves helped set the tone of the new Aqua interface. The first two releases of Mac OS X shared the same wallpaper. Then some reach the Sonoran Desert, but none or almost none make it to the Chihuahuan Desert. Winter storms strong enough to break through the Pacific coast mountain spine hit the Great Basin, Mojave, and then Colorado Deserts first. Although, if conditions are just right, they might get a wet air mass flowing up the Gulf of California between the Mexican states of Baja California and the Sonoran mainland. The Colorado and Mojave Deserts are last in line and often do without. The Sonoran Desert is next, getting monsoons more often than not, but still there are some years when the monsoons are weak or never show up. The Chihuahuan Desert gets first dibs, and so regularly receives summer rain (but little or no winter rain). Only when those air masses still have moisture after drenching the Chihuahuan and Sonoran Deserts, will they then reach the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. The monsoons first reach the Chihuahuan Desert, and if strong enough will reach to the Sonoran Desert. Hot air rises, and the void created must be filled by cooler air, usually coming from an air mass flowing over oceans.įor most of the arid west of North America, that somewhat cooler, water-saturated air comes from the Gulf of Mexico. By July the desert temperatures are at their peak. None of that is true for summer monsoons. Cooler winter temperatures mean less evaporation and so more rainwater can be absorbed by the soil, and eventually plant roots. Sometimes strong storms, strong enough to cause flooding, squeak through but they are rare. If a cell reaches the California deserts and is strong enough to still have water after the mountains try to wring as much of that precious liquid as possible, then usually the desert may get pelted with a gentle, steady rain across a broad front. Winter rains begin as low-pressure cells above the Bering Sea, saturated with water vapor and then shifting south and east pushed along by the whims of the jet stream. The 1976 flooding left the sand dunes of what is now the Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge looking like an archipelago of sand islands surrounded by water several feet deep. 1n 1939 and again in 1976, both in September at the tail end of the monsoon season, hurricanes hit the Coachella Valley causing widespread flooding. Occasionally, a hurricane will bring especially strong winds and heavy rains. When you see the cut banks of desert washes, the force needed to move that much water, rock, gravel, and sand was almost always due to a monsoonal storm. But monsoonal storms are sometimes much stronger, dropping more rain per minute than the often-gentler winter rains, so even with increased evaporation, there can still be enough to make a difference for desert plants. That means a lot of the rain hitting the baked earth evaporates before it can quench the thirst of desert plants. Monsoons occur when it is especially hot, when that hot rising air creates enough of a vacuum to pull in the wet air from the Gulf. If you are where the rain is falling, the temperatures can drop 20-40 degrees, from well above 100 to maybe 75 degrees, refreshing and exciting because with the rain there is almost always thunder and lightning, and sometimes flash floods. If you are not within the rain zone, all you get is humidity. The rains can be heavy but isolated to maybe a few square miles more or less. When they do show up, it is typically sometime between July and early September, when the desert is at its hottest. Some years they stick around for weeks and months at a time, while other years (and seeming increasingly so) they do not show up at all. Summer rains, monsoons, in the California deserts are persnickety at best. “Why are the desert blooms that spring to life after a monsoon so magnificent? The answer is – their impermanence …” - Alaric Hutchinson |
